Projections, forecasts and the problem of mixed vintages

Two values labelled 2025 can disagree without either being a live count. Keep the target year separate from the release that produced it.

Two dates belong on every projection

A target year tells you when a population value applies. A vintage tells you which release produced it. A projection for 2050 made in one release can change in a later release because inputs or assumptions changed. Moving the computer clock to 2050 would not turn the earlier projection into an observation. Keep both dates when recording a result.

The bundled timeline identifies 1950–2023 as UN World Population Prospects 2024 estimates and 2024–2100 as that release's medium projection. The cutoff is explicit in its proj_from field. Therefore, even the timeline's 2025 point is a projection from this vintage. This label describes the bundled series, not a universal claim that every population dataset treats 2025 as projected.

Compare vintages without pretending to measure growth

For 2025, the World Bank world snapshot contains 8,215,424,893. The UN WPP 2024 medium timeline contains 8,231,613,067. Subtracting gives 8,231,613,067 − 8,215,424,893 = 16,188,174, or 0.20% of the World Bank value. This is a difference between source layers for the same target year, not population added between two dates.

World Bank population indicators can themselves draw on UN and national sources, so these are not necessarily independent estimates. The local World Bank file was generated on 7 September 2026; the timeline names its UN release but does not provide an equivalent retrieval timestamp. Do not call their difference an independently established error margin or claim the later local file must be more accurate.

Stay inside one scenario for a change calculation

Within the bundled UN medium series, the 2025 value is 8,231,613,067 and the 2050 value is 9,664,378,585. The scenario change is 9,664,378,585 − 8,231,613,067 = 1,432,765,518, which is 17.41% of the 2025 scenario value. Both endpoints come from the same release, reducing one avoidable inconsistency. Neither endpoint is being presented here as an observed October 2026 population.

Do not replace the first endpoint with the World Bank snapshot while keeping the UN endpoint unless you explicitly describe the splice. That would combine an across-vintage difference with the projected trajectory. It might produce a useful custom planning calculation, but it would no longer be the change shown by the unmodified UN scenario.

A scenario is conditional, not a promise

A population projection follows assumptions about fertility, mortality and migration. A forecast usually emphasizes what its maker expects to happen; terminology can overlap, so inspect the published method rather than relying on the word alone. The UN medium series should not be treated as a guarantee, a countdown to a fixed outcome or a claim about any individual's future.

This bundle contains one medium path, not the full range of UN variants or uncertainty intervals. We therefore do not invent high and low bands around the figure. A smooth line is not an uncertainty assessment. For planning that depends on plausible extremes, consult the official release's alternatives and methodology rather than manufacturing a range from the difference between World Bank and UN values.

A useful saved comparison names the dataset, release, scenario, target years and any splice. When revisiting it, check whether the release changed before describing the change as a new demographic trend. This is a practical reason to keep historical snapshots labelled instead of automatically relabelling old content with today's date.

Try the reasoning

Is 16,188,174, the difference between the two 2025 world values, evidence that the world grew by that amount between the World Bank and UN snapshots?

Reveal the explanation

No. Both values target 2025 but come from different source layers and vintages. The subtraction measures disagreement between those values, not growth over time. For the worked 2025–2050 scenario change, use both endpoints from the same UN medium series.

The takeaway

A defensible projection comparison preserves release, scenario and target year. Same-year disagreement is not growth, and one medium path is not an uncertainty interval.
