Sydney and Istanbul: which population are you comparing?

A place name is not a boundary. Use the bundled city records to distinguish urban centres, provinces and settlement figures.

World Alive editorial notes · Initial review

AI-assisted explanation; calculations checked against bundled data; not independent source validation.

The same heading can hide different units

A city can mean a legal municipality, a province, a continuous built-up area or a broader metropolitan region. Those units answer different questions. A council budget needs the population of its jurisdiction; a study of settlement patterns may need an urban-centre definition. Neither becomes interchangeable with the other because both carry a familiar city name. The boundary is part of the measurement, not a footnote. Grid-based urban-centre classification combines population size, population density and spatial contiguity of 1 km2 cells. A headcount alone cannot establish density, land area or commuting ties; an administrative boundary is a different dimension.

The local Sydney page uses 4,150,917 people, a 2025 UN WUP urban-centre figure. Its separate GeoNames settlement record contains 5,638,830, with no population reference date supplied. Do not label that second number a verified City of Sydney municipality count, or silently call it Greater Sydney. The local record does not establish either interpretation.

Istanbul has a different headline basis

Istanbul's headline is 15,907,951, identified as a province population in the bundled administrative-unit record. The record was modified on 16 April 2026, but its population reference date is unknown. A database maintenance date cannot be converted into a census date. The model anchor of 1 July 2025 likewise does not date the underlying observation.

The separate Istanbul UN urban centre is 15,014,763 for 2025. Its GeoNames settlement value is 15,701,602, also lacking a population date. The province-minus-urban-centre arithmetic is 15,907,951 − 15,014,763 = 893,188. That difference is not a measured count of rural residents: the dates differ or are unknown, and the local association does not verify that one boundary contains the other.

Computed from cities/AUS.json, cities/TUR.json and city_page_records.json. UN WUP 2025 release; Istanbul province record modified 2026-04-16, not its population date. Settlement and province figures must not be treated as a common-year series. Derived locally, not independently validated.

Do the useful comparison, then limit it

For a closer like-for-like comparison, use the two UN WUP 2025 urban-centre values. Istanbul divided by Sydney is 15,014,763 ÷ 4,150,917 = 3.62 times. This describes the relative population of those two delineated urban centres in that release. It does not compare provincial responsibilities, housing costs, land area or the experience of travelling across either city.

The figure deliberately avoids putting the province and settlement values into one ranked bar chart. Such a chart would invite a cleaner comparison than the metadata supports. The tabular evidence retains the rejected alternatives because knowing why a number was not used is part of a reproducible comparison. A name-and-coordinate match supports association; it does not establish a boundary relationship.

Do not repair missing coverage by subtraction

Istanbul's district list has 39 memberships checked against the local reference list, but only 38 population values. The missing district value cannot safely be obtained by subtracting the available subtotal from the province headline. Dates are not reconciled, and the retained district populations have not been independently validated. Complete membership coverage and complete population coverage are different claims.

When reading either city page, first inspect the population-definition label, then the source and reference date, and only then a share or rank. The Sydney base divided by Australia's 2025 population is arithmetically reproducible, but it combines distinct source layers and is not a new official city-share statistic. Follow the separate Istanbul page to see how the same interface can use a different basis.

Try the reasoning

Can you say Istanbul had 893,188 people living outside its urban centre in 2025 by subtracting the two local values?

Reveal the explanation

No. The province population has no supplied reference date, and the boundary relationship is unverified. You can report the numerical difference between records, but not a 2025 outside-centre population. For a common-definition comparison with Sydney, use both 2025 UN urban-centre figures instead.

The takeaway

Compare boundary plus date plus source, not city names alone. Sydney's urban-centre headline and Istanbul's province headline are different measures.
