Explore the live map
The map on the home page colours all 217 countries by one of four indicators and lets you drill from the planet to a single city district. Everything ticks live: the world counter, each country's estimate and every city figure advance continuously from the latest annual data.
Four ways to colour the world
Switch modes with the buttons above the map; the ranking card on the right follows the mode (fastest growing / shrinking, densest, oldest...). Toggle country names and city dots, scroll to zoom, drag to pan.
Click a country
The panel shows a live estimate, 30-year sparkline, births and deaths per day, migration, density, urban share, life expectancy, fertility, age structure, GDP per capita, world rank and share β and every settlement of 5,000+ from GeoNames, with UN urban-area figures in the separate 12,138-record UN source catalogue; source catalogue size is not a verified place-association count. Each country also has a full page.
Click a city
City view zooms the map, lists available administrative records (membership and population verification vary), wards or boroughs (using each country's own terminology) and localities inside the city, and links to the city's page with nearby cities and comparisons.
